Helping Newcomers

There are many opportunities for businesses, individuals and other organizations to get involved in helping newcomers get settled, find work and become part of our thriving city.

We provide opportunities for:

  • Volunteering in one of our many program options
  • Helping newcomers to learn English

Are you fluent in a non-English language?

To meet a growing demand for translation and interpretation services, we continually recruit qualified and experienced individuals.

Translators to English

We are looking for document translators from the following languages:

Arabic Bengali Chinese
French German Greek
Hindi Italian Persian
Polish Portuguese Punjabi
Romanian Russian Spanish
Turkish Ukrainian Vietnamese

Applicants who meet the following requirements will be considered:

  • Member of ATIS (Association of Translators and Interpreters of Saskatchewan)
  • University degree (studies in the target language)
  • CLB 8 or above in English
  • More than one year’s experience in document translation
  • University degree in translation, interpretation or linguistics a definite asset

Interpreters

Anyone wishing to be an interpreter is invited to apply if they are verbally fluent in English and any of the following languages:

Arabic Amharic Bengali
Burmese Chinese French
Hindi Karen Kirundi
Kurdish Nepali Oromo
Persian Portuguese Punjabi
Romanian Russian Somali
Spanish Swahili Tagalog
Tigrigna Turkish Ukrainian
Urdu Vietnamese  

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Fluency and proficiency in English and another language
  • LINC 6 or above 
  • Minimum high school diploma
  • Prior interpreting experience
  • Flexible working schedule (between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. )
  • A Class 5 driver’s licence and own vehicle preferred but not required

 

Opportunities for Organizations and Businesses

Our Cultural Bridging team will work with your staff and clients to provide Enhanced Cultural Responsiveness training. Workshops are provided free of charge and will be tailored to your needs in the areas of cultural awareness and diversity. Topics include: cultural competency, cultural diversity, intercultural communication, workplace diversity and cultural-specific information.
