Creating Community with Provincial Settlement Services

This will include a story about one or more individuals who have received services from SFS and have settled into life in Saskatoon. For example, referrals to services that they need or simply getting their paperwork put together.

This content is part of a curated collection celebrating 45 years of Connecting, Welcoming, and Belonging at Saskatoon Open Door Society.

The Provincial Settlement Services (PSS) and the Temporary Foreign Workers (TFW) programs play a vital role in creating community by supporting newcomers at every stage of their settlement journey. Funded by the Government of Saskatchewan and Employment and Social Development Canada, respectively, these programs provide personalized guidance, practical resources, and meaningful connections that help newcomers feel welcomed, informed, and empowered.

Through needs assessments and individualized settlement planning, clients receive tailored referrals to housing, healthcare, education, employment, and government benefits. By assisting with essential documentation such as health cards, Social Insurance Numbers, and benefit applications, the programs reduce barriers and promote independence. Workshops and information sessions further strengthen community integration by increasing awareness of workplace rights, health and safety standards and available public services.

Beyond practical support, both programs foster belonging. One-on-one counselling and advocacy ensure that clients feel heard, protected, and valued. Referrals to language training, employment programs, and community partners encourage social connection and long-term stability.

By building knowledge, confidence, and access to services, these programs do more than provide information – they create pathways for newcomers and temporary foreign workers to actively participate, contribute, and thrive within Saskatchewan’s diverse and growing communities.
