About Us

Our Research

At the Saskatoon Open Door Society (SODS), research is a fundamental part of our mission to support newcomers, enhance community integration, and create equitable opportunities.

Our diverse research initiatives and involvements not only inform our programs and services but also shape partnerships and influence policies. This approach enables us to drive evidence-based practices in settlement services, community engagement, and social innovation.

Purpose

SODS’ research collaborations and initiatives are designed to address the unique challenges faced by newcomers in Saskatoon and beyond. Through data collection, analysis, program evaluation, and collaborative studies, we gain insights into critical issues such as economic inclusion, housing accessibility, and language acquisition.

These insights empower us to make informed decisions, advocate for effective policy changes, and continuously enhance the quality of services we provide, hoping that our efforts positively impact community well-being and foster greater inclusion.

Key Focus Areas

From Settlement to Social inclusion and Cohesion SODS collaborates on academic and non-academic research to examine and influence successful newcomer settlement and integration. Our focus spans:

  • Initial Settlement Needs: Language acquisition, housing, education, access and referral to essential services
  • Economic Empowerment: Employment and entrepreneurship
  • Community Integration: Sense of belonging, well-being, and social connections

By supporting and participating in research projects, we aim to contribute to improving support programs, informing policymakers, and strengthening communities.

Sharing Insights

As part of our dedication to knowledge mobilization, SODS will support sharing the results of research collaborations through our website. These resources offer valuable insights for stakeholders, funders, and community members interested in supporting the newcomer journey.

Looking Ahead

Our research efforts are an ongoing journey toward a more inclusive and equitable community. By expanding initiatives and deepening our understanding of newcomer experiences, we remain focused on practical solutions that benefit our newcomer clients, strengthening our community through evidence-based practice, and addressing the evolving needs of newcomers to build a brighter future for all.
